Drawing Faces

start w circle
divide in half vertical
and divide in half horizontal
divide bottom half in half again
top line vertically is brow line
bottom line vertically is eye line

circle eyes in middle of eye line
about one eye in between in general

add brows along brow line

fill in eyes w pupil and iris

add eyelids

this is the underlying features of the skull

bottom of circle is nose line
nose is pyramid/triangle

jaw line and chin will define your character
babies, women, men, size etc.
pull down from sides and pull around to chin

rule of 3s for the head

ears start at eye line and come down to about the bottom of the nose

add neck
the skinnier the neck, the younger the character
split between the nose line and the chin is the mouth line
if you start at center of bridge of nose and draw lines down past sides of nose will determine how big the mouth is
the mouth can be very expressive to show emotion

with cartooning you can change perspectives for character

pull up sides of head and add hair

for females
heavier on the back part of eyes helps give eyelashes
eyebrows are thinner

nose is smaller, more perky
lips are also different for females
the jaw line is more angled and smaller than male
ears are also smaller
neck is thinner

here is female

use template for general proportions
but stretch out and change to suit character

bouncer character

move brow and eye line up and close together
the eyes are closer together
nose is high and wide and big
jaw line starts up high and goes out and back around
its fun to make some things large and some super small
so he has tiny ears
smaller than proportionate mouth
sideways and annoyed
add extra chins to show how big and burly he is
