Drawing Eyes

This is notes based on You Tube video by BeeJayDel

eyes start out as round circle
split horizontal and vertical and that is the center of the eye

           

when you change the position of the head, the eyes move along with it
example - when you draw a 3/4 perspective for the head, the eye will follow same curves as the head
and same as the head, everything on the farther side is smaller because it is farther away



the center line will represent where the eye is looking
where the eye gazes, the center line changes as well



Female more realistic eye

the shape of the eye is determined by the eyelids
human eye is more almond shaped
the top line is heavier line weight, starting light and going heavier



add some eyelashes
bring the bottom line around, it is lighter line weight than top
add pupil and highlights and iris
add eyelid, it follow circle, showing where the eye sits in the head
in females, keep lines under eye limited, the more lines, the older it looks
eyebrows are thinner, heavier on bottom line and lighter line on top



A little more cartoony

start with circle, divided and almond shape
top eyelid is more angled, still start light and go heavier towards outside of eye
eyelid creases a little more angled
doesn't add tear duct and doesn't actually connect bottom line all the way around




And more cartoony

more of a circle instead of almond, but still an oval shape
fill in back lash part with lighter line to suggest where rest of eye is
really big exaggerated lashes




Super cartoony

basically a circle
smaller pupil and iris
not as thick in back with eyelashes


Old School Cartoon Way

eyes close together
exaggerated the circles
iris and pupils can be different

and simple button eye


Male eyes

start with circle, lines, almond shape
the almond shape isn't as pronounced, back line is closer to center than females is a little higher


top eye not as heavy
eyelashes aren't drawn in
male eyebrows thicker with heavy bottom line
can add a bottom crease, doesn't add age as much as with females
a little more angled
lines not all connected on bottom eye line
on some male eyes, there isn't a bottom line
when coloring this works well, white ends the eye and then skin color


Profile Eyes

side view
start with circle and horizontal and vertical dividing lines
eye is more of a triangle starting from back and a curved line for the front of the eye
pull up and out the eyelashes, the front eyelash is the longest
with males, angle is not as narrow and more angled


using different lines can change the character and disposition

Here is my final image I started with 3 images from Unsplash a picture of an old man by Madhav Rajesh a picture of the sea and a picture of rowboats cut out subject from background - I used select subject and then select and mask to refine my selection. Then as output method use new layer desaturate (command+shift+U) (I didn't make a clean selection because I didn't think it would make a difference in the final image) drag in second image lower opacity on the new layer to move and transform while seeing where you are placing it in reference to your subject image when you have it where you want, up the opacity back to 100% then command+click on you subject layer to load it as a selection and with the second image layer selected click on the mask icon at the bottom right to create a layer mask in the shape of your subject I also added a solid color background layer now you can paint on the canvas with the layer mask selected command...

Smooth Lines in Procreate

notes from video by BeeJayDel canvas size = 4500x5400 @300 dpi using natural inker brush with these settings he uses matte screen protector and drawing gloves let the tip of pencil do all the work do not put palm against the screen let arm do all the movement, uses arm to move instead of wrist adjust pressure as you go don't come up with hand to taper off, do that with pressure he usually starts heavier and tapers off, but you can start soft then go harder then let up practice daily just do lines like this or use as a warm up exercise to get your arm and hand loose and fluid his sketch lines are just a guide or general idea he likes the fluid organic flow if you try to hard to trace it looks like its traced and mechanical stay loose with your lines the slower you go, the more jitters you will see can turn streamline up to help with jitters, but your tapers won't be as nice and it spills out more he usually only uses streamline to do long lines, like a...

Notes from Youtube video Back from MAX w Aaron Nace tips for picking photos to use main image should be a darker subject with bright background second image should be brighter subject on darker background and should tell a story about the main subject open images in ps with secondary image layer above main image layer reduce opacity of secondary image layer and place and size where you want bring opacity back up move secondary image layer below main image layer change blending mode of main image to screen which will only let lighter areas show thru add layer mask to secondary image layer using black soft round brush paint on mask to erase areas you don't want
