Double Exposures
notes from a YouTube video by Paul Trans on Adobe Live - Photoshop Master Class

TIPS
* double exposures are generally a subject, either person or animal and nature images
*the best nature images to use with double exposure are images that go from dark to light or
dense to more sparse images
*also images with implied lines (don't need to outline entire subject) tend to be more dramatic and
eye catching
* try changing blend mode, use clipping masks, use blend if
* to make a group of layers that all are clipped to the subject - hold cmd and click on subject layer, then with selection active, click add folder. then click add layer mask. now everything you put in that group will be clipped to subject.

Example 1
starts with a dramatic portrait

duplicates layer
select subject and mask
added a white color fill layer for background
adds some trees on a new layer, and clips to subject layer

here is my version

another way to adjust this is
duplicate subject layer again and move above tree layer
change blending mode to screen (or your choice) to let parts of her show through
can move and transform tree layer how you want

here I used a different sunset pic, duplicated elephant layer and set to multiply
then painted with black on the mask to hide some and let parts of ears, eyes and trunk show

other ways to blend it
change blending mode and can change opacity
or add a mask and paint away the areas you don't want to show
Example 2
then he added a branch image in new layer

used select color range to select white areas, adjust fuzziness, hold option while you click mask and it
will invert you selection and hide the white area
he created a folder and hold down option and drag layer mask of subject to the folder to have the mask applied to everything in the folder (so all images in the folder will be limited to her head)

(he likes this design because of the implied lines)
then added more branches and flowered branches
free transformed and rotate to fit image
warp or puppet warp to adjust flowering branches

can use leaf brushes or your choice of brush to add elements
then duplicated the subject layer and moved to top of stack in folder
if you clip your subject layer to only a certain branch layer, her face will only show up on those branches.
can play around with blending modes
can play with saturation of subject layer and move or transform

add a color lookup layer if you want
(futuristic bleak)
added birds and more leaves with leaf brush

try adding a gradient map adjustment layer
(he did dark brown to light brown and add a green stop in middle for midtowns

here is mine with trees clipped to subject layer, a duplicate subject layer at top of folder set to screen

added a color look up layer (late sunset, opacity at 67%

and a gold-sepia gradient map added

Example 3
new stock image

in channels panel, select red channel and use distort - wave to drag it to the right,
then with green channel selected, use distort - sheer to drag it to the left
show all channels again to show effect

here is my version

Example 4
restart with same image
control + J to duplicate layer
name new layer red
double click on red layer to open layer styles
under blending options panel
turn off g and b to leave just red
click ok
now you can move that layer
duplicate original layer again
do same thing and turn off r and b to leave just green
and move it also

my version (I like this method much better)

Example 5
same image again
* you can use effects on individual channels
in channels panel, click thru and choose which one makes her darkest
control + click it to select the pixels in that layer (which is just red, green or blue pixels)
add new layer in layers panel and click add mask and invert mask
fill with a gradient
turn on your base layer

generally people use this to select parts (colors or pixels) and paint on them, not just throw a gradient on it
here is my version
picked blue channel, command + click to select pixels, added new layer, added layer mask,
inverted layer mask (command + I) filled with gold/blue gradient mask with the stops taken out to blend better and I set the gradient layer to linear light

mountain layer on top of subject layer with mountain layer blend mode set to lighten

this one, started like the one above, then he added the white flower layer, clipping mask group (like described above) and painted on the layer mask with black to add to it

then duplicated the subject layer and drag it to top of layer stack and change blend mode of subject layer to lighten

added branches, duplicated them and changed the blend mode of some of the branches layers

to unify image you can add a b&w layer on top

or a color look up layer to blend all the colors and images
